Community Speedwatch
Community Speed Watch (CSW) is a volunteer‑led initiative supported by Cayton Parish Council to help reduce speeding through the village and improve road safety for residents, pedestrians and road users. Working in partnership with North Yorkshire Police, trained volunteers monitor vehicle speeds at approved locations and record details of vehicles travelling above the speed limit.
The scheme aims to encourage safer driving, raise awareness of speed limits and support long‑term improvements in driver behaviour.
How Community Speed Watch Works
Teams of trained volunteers operate at designated points within Cayton using approved speed‑monitoring equipment. When a vehicle is recorded exceeding the speed limit:
- Volunteers note the vehicle’s details
- Information is passed securely to North Yorkshire Police
- Drivers may receive a warning letter
- Repeat or excessive speeding may lead to further police action
Community Speed Watch is not an enforcement scheme; it is an educational and preventative initiative designed to make our roads safer.
Becoming a Volunteer
Residents who would like to support the scheme can register their interest with the Parish Council. Volunteers must:
- Be over 18
- Complete a short training session provided by North Yorkshire Police
- Be available to take part in occasional monitoring sessions
Training covers safe operation, recording procedures and how to work as part of a CSW team.
Parish Council Support
Cayton Parish Council coordinates the local scheme, liaises with North Yorkshire Police and ensures volunteers have the equipment and guidance they need. The Council also reviews monitoring data to help identify areas where additional road‑safety measures may be required.
Why Community Speed Watch Matters
Speeding is one of the most common concerns raised by residents. CSW helps to:
- Reduce speeding through visibility and awareness
- Improve safety near schools, residential areas and busy junctions
- Provide valuable data to support future road‑safety improvements
- Strengthen community involvement in keeping Cayton safe
