North Yorkshire Police are reminding motorists to take extra care during periods of heavy rain and not to take unnecessary risks when encountering flooded roads.

Flood water can be far more dangerous than it appears. Water may be deeper than expected and can conceal damaged road surfaces, open drains, debris and other hazards. Moving water can also pose a serious risk to vehicles and their occupants.

🚗 If you encounter a flooded road

  • Turn around and find an alternative route if you are unsure whether it is safe to proceed.
  • Never ignore road closure signs, barriers or other warnings.
  • Slow down around standing water and avoid creating waves which could affect nearby properties or pedestrians.
  • If your vehicle becomes stranded, move to a place of safety if it is safe to do so and seek assistance.
  • Keep children away from flood water.
  • Never assume flood water is safe simply because another vehicle has driven through it.
  • If in doubt, don’t drive through it. Turn around, don’t drown.
  • Planning ahead, checking weather and travel information before setting out and taking a cautious approach can help keep everyone safe during severe weather.

🧱 Emergency Sandbags in Cayton

The Parish of Cayton has a local community store of sandbags which can be deployed in an emergency to help prevent or reduce the impact of flooding.

The sandbags are intended as an emergency community resource. Residents and businesses at risk of flooding should, wherever possible, take appropriate steps in advance to protect their own property rather than relying solely on emergency supplies.
