Members of the public have now reported more than 55.7 million suspicious emails to the UK’s Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS). Since its launch by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in 2020, this free service has contributed to the removal of over 250,000 scams operating across 443,000 malicious websites.

This milestone highlights the important role the public plays in tackling cyber crime and keeping communities safe online.

Why Reporting Phishing Matters

‘Phishing’ scams involve criminals using emails, text messages or phone calls to trick people into revealing personal or financial information. These scams may:

  • Direct you to fake websites designed to steal your details
  • Infect your device with malicious software
  • Encourage you to make payments under false pretences

The NCSC, as a UK government organisation, has the authority to investigate and remove scam infrastructure. By reporting suspicious activity, you help:

  • Reduce scam messages reaching your inbox or phone
  • Make yourself a harder target for criminals
  • Protect others in your community from fraud

How to Report Suspicious Emails and Texts

If something doesn’t feel right, STOP and follow these steps:

  • Do not engage – don’t reply, click links, call numbers, or make payments
  • Check independently – contact organisations using trusted details you already have (for banks, dial 159)
  • Report suspicious emails by forwarding them to:
    📧 report@phishing.gov.uk
  • Report suspicious text messages by forwarding them to:
    📱 7726 (free of charge)

How to Report Suspicious Phone Calls

If you receive a suspicious call:

  • Hang up immediately
  • Verify the caller using official contact details you trust
  • Do not rely on caller ID – numbers can be spoofed
  • Report the call by texting 7726 with the word “Call” followed by the phone number
