Fraud Awareness: Protect Yourself from Scams

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant against fraud following a recent awareness campaign highlighting two forms of financial crime that continue to affect people across the UK.

The National Crime Agency has released a new video as part of its Fraud Explained campaign, focusing on investment fraud. Criminals often promote fake investment opportunities that promise high returns with little or no risk, using convincing websites, social media adverts and persuasive sales tactics to gain trust and steal money.

Residents are also being warned about fraud by abuse of a position of trust, where an individual uses their position for personal or financial gain. Examples can include the misuse of charitable funds or the inappropriate use of financial powers granted to assist another person. During the 2025/26 financial year, £93.8 million was lost nationally through this type of fraud, with more than £51 million of losses affecting people aged 70 and over.
